I typically check out 3-13 picture books a week from the library. I’ve decided to add a blog post, sharing my favorite library book of the week.
My favorite picture book this week is Wangari’s Trees of Peace: A True Story from Africa by Jeanette Winter. This is a wonderful non fiction picture book based on the life of Wangari Maathai., winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004.
The story is told simply for its target audience but is also truthful, telling how Wangari was beaten with clubs and imprisoned for standing tall to protect the old trees of Kenya.
The story is inspirational and empowering with an environmental push that is so appropriate for the day. Thank you for telling this story, Jeanette Winter!

3-13 kids books a week. At first I thought, how in the world does Rachel find time for that? Upon further contemplation, I think it's a great idea. We should be devouring kids books, learning what makes a great story, and what our contemporaries are up to.
Thanks for the inspiration Rachel. I'm going to the library this week!
WOW it sounds a little dramatic to be a pb.
I'll have to take a peek. My library book of the week would be an old classic, Rebecca.
I felt the illustrations and word choice were well done for the target age group. I didn't feel it was too much for young kids to take in. It is a true story though, and life can be dramatic! You should check it out, Kim. I think you would like it.
Ryan,
My husband thinks I'm cheating Clark County kids out of their books! :) Our library system is great because we can reserve books online and pick them up when the FVRL computer lady calls. I read them on Saturday and Sunday mornings. It is a great way to see what's being published. Have fun at the library!
Isn't the library wonderful! I love their "holds" system. I have it set up so that the library lady emails me instead of calling :-)
