What’s a Kidlitosphere?

Well, that’s what I wanted to know, so I decided to attend the 2008 Kidlitosphere Conference in Portland, Oregon last Saturday. The sphere, I’ve learned, is a community of techno-savvy bloggers that consume, review and recommend top notch children’s books. Some claim there is a skin surrounding the sphere, others say its more of a permeable membrane.

At the conference I discovered I have a “boring author blog”. At first I was a little disappointed in this revelation, but I am coming to accept it now. I realize that my personal goal is to perfect my PB manuscripts and rise to the top of the slush pile. I also have that whole “Mom” thing going right now, so blogging everyday isn’t something I can commit to.

I am going to try kicking my blog up a notch with some tips I got from Mother Reader. Gregory K. also gave some great advice on using a blog as a marketing tool. I had a great time learning from these blogging pros and some of them were so funny!

So, I don't think I've broken into the sphere yet, but maybe they'll let me hang around outside and peek in once in awhile.

Other Kidlitosphere links you may want to check out. Cybils, Chasing Ray, Just One More Book, and Fuse #8.

Hey, Rachel,
You're already in the sphere, girl! And no, this is not a boring author blog. Glad we could spend the day together!

I think that someone with a tagline like: "All I really need to know I learned while watching Sesame Street" might have an author blog, but not a "boring author blog". And of course you're already in the 'sphere. Coming to the conference is a huge step. Welcome!

I like your blog too! And love the new picture, btw. Thanks for stopping by mine... I just posted some news (nothing big, but it made me happy!) I've been so crazy busy with this new freelance writing job that I haven't done any of my "own" writing. Today's conference will inspire me to get back to it.
Take care,
Cindy

250 points for using the phrase "permeable membrane".

How do you make the time to go to all of these conferences!?

I am a children's writer living in Washington State. I enjoy reading and writing picture books, spending time with my family, and walking my adorable dogs in the park. Thanks for stopping by.
